The Power of the One

Today we have the honour of hearing from a very special guest blogger, Helen Geddes. Helen is a blessing to so many people and a wonderful gift, particularly to me (Alicia) as I have the privilege of being her daughter. She was recently reflecting on someone who made a huge impact on her life. These are her thoughts:

The people we interact with throughout our lives can have a profound impact. Just recently, I have been remembering one person in my life who’s influence, though only knowing them a short time, has been significant.

I am a flautist, and in my late teens, I was encouraged to sit for the final LTCL exams by my teacher. The practical side was in hand, but I needed to pass advanced music theory to obtain this qualification. I felt really daunted about this as I did not have a lot of confidence in my musical theory ability.

That was before I met Hamilton Dickson!

He was an elderly man, well past retirement age, with a huge personality and a passion for music, and he had the remarkable ability to bring out the best in his students. He was SO positive, exuding enthusiasm for me and my attempts at theory. He was quite convinced I was a budding composer. Every time I turned up for tutoring, I knew he was delighted to see me, and he took a deep interest in all I was doing.

His positivity and belief in me rubbed off, and I sailed through the theoretical exam with ease.

I have been reflecting if that man could transform me just by his belief how much more does our heavenly Father have the potential to transform us by his belief in us? Our heavenly Father loves his children very deeply, he created us, and he is deeply interested in every aspect of our lives. He also knows our potential and is delighted in our faltering steps towards him and our steps of obedience to do what he wants us to do. He is always delighted when we spend time with him. He cheers us on, knows us and believes in us more than we can ever comprehend.

From the words of the prophet Isaiah,

‘See, I have inscribed you on the palm of my hands; your walls are continually before me.’

If we truly grasped how precious we are to our heavenly Father, the depth of God’s belief and love, his positivity towards us, it would go on transforming us day by day, year by year, decade by decade!

Father, may we hear your words to us today. May these truths sink deep within our souls. May we discover afresh what it means for you to be our Father, and what it means for us to be your children. Amen

Do you think God is deeply interested in every aspect of your life? Have you found him to be the one who cheers you on and who believes in you more than you can imagine? What is he saying to you today? Is there or has there been someone in your life who reveals to you the heart of God? In what way do they or have they done so?
