The gift of beginnings

I love the start of things. I love the promise of what is yet to be. The seemingly endless possibilities. Whether it be in the empty notebook that I pick up, the blank canvas set before me, an empty garden bed prepared but unplanted, a handful of seeds, or, far more significantly, the birth of a baby.

We are people of beginnings. Yes, of course, we are also people of endings. And we must learn to live with what can be the mundane processes of the life that lies in between.

But today, we breathe in a new beginning. Today, we can hold the anticipation of what is yet to be. Today we can give thanks for what has been and what is yet to come. And today I am thankful that God gifts us seasons and rhythm. That he has built these into the very fabric of the universe which we inhabit.

Today, this day, is a gift. And the year that it heralds is full of possibility and promise. We never know what will come our way, 2020 was a year that demonstrated that forcefully. But we walk into this year in the gaze of the almighty.

Dear Father, thank you for this new year. For the assurance that you are with us, and for the potential, the opportunities and the possibilities that will come our way. Give us eyes to see you and to hear you this year. May we learn to walk ever nearer and ever closer to you. Amen

Are you someone who enjoys beginnings? Who looks forward to new things? What gives you hope and courage in the face of a new year?
