Faithfulness in the small things

A couple of nights ago, I was thinking about an inspirational woman I know. One whose faithfulness has been limitless, who day after day, year after year, has served. Who has willingly and cheerfully sacrificed much to be a blessing to others. She would not think of herself in these terms. I don’t think she has any idea how much she had blessed or how Christlike she has been. And as I thought about her, I wondered, how often do we get our perspective wrong? Do we focus so much on the big and significant, at least what we deem to be so, that we fail to realise what it is that really matters? And what is it that really matters anyway?

Do we get misled into thinking that the small and insignificant things are just that? That they don’t really matter.

Do we instead think that what is important are the big and glorious moments of our lives? And do we tell ourselves that the ends justify the means?

I’m not sure that Jesus sees our lives that way. Are our “big moments” actually those that are insignificant? Is it rather our seemingly mundane lives on which all else hinges? If so, how I respond to my children when I am tired and frustrated matters. If I am courteous or rude to the person in front of me, even if they have just failed to obey the road rules or have acted in a way that I find offensive matters. Am I polite? Am I aware of the needs of those around me? Do I think that my needs are more important than theirs?  Am I generous, not just in my surplus, but to my cost? Am I interruptible? And do my actions reveal my heart even if I think otherwise?

Faithfulness doesn’t sound momentous or even very appealing. To be honest, it sounds like hard work. But faithfulness is a characteristic of our magnificent God. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, we are told repeatedly that our God is faithful, even when his people are not.

It is our job to follow in his footsteps.

Lord Jesus, teach us to be faithful. Give us eyes to see what truly matters and the grace to become increasingly more like you. Thank you that you never change. That you are our refuge and strong tower. That your faithfulness is unending, and so we can rest secure in you, always. Amen

What do you consider important? Do you notice the small things? What is God revealing to you? Where is he prompting you to change? Who are the faithful people around you? How could you bless them today?
